Privacy TED Talk

This may contain: three tickets for the top secret show are shown in red ink on white paper with black writing Privacy is something that has become harder and harder to control as technology and social media continue to grow. After watching the TED Talks in class, one thing that stood out to me was just how much information can be collected about us without us even realizing it. We use our phones every day, but most of us probably do not stop to think about how much data we are giving away in the process.

I think the government should create and enforce clear privacy laws that require companies to be transparent about what information they collect, why they collect it, and who they share it with. People should also have more control over whether their information can be sold or shared.

One issue discussed was data mining, which can involve collecting user-generated information, tracking online behavior, and even inspecting data more deeply. This information can then be used to create a digital dossier, basically a profile of who you are based on information collected about you. I think this affects me and almost everyone I know because we are constantly online. My friends, family, and I use social media, shop online, search Google, and use different apps every day. Even if our private messages and texts are not being read, our activity can still reveal a lot about us. One of the TED Talks compared what we do online to electronic tattoos, because our online actions can leave a lasting mark.

Companies can use information about our behavior to decide what advertisements or content to show us. There is also the issue of third-party data. Once one company willingly gives or sells information to another party, it becomes much harder to control where that information goes afterward.

We also have a responsibility to protect ourselves. We can pay closer attention to privacy settings, limit the personal information we post, use strong passwords, and actually read what we are agreeing to when possible. We may not be able to completely avoid data collection, but we can be more aware of the digital footprint we leave behind.
